Let’s give this a try
To be honest, I have no clue how to write a newsletter. When I woke up this morning and went through Twitter I found this thread. Reading it reiterated a lot of what I was already thinking.
1) It’ll help me make my thoughts more clear and understand/appreciate what I do more- on a daily basis
2) I can add value now and in the future to others building startups or those who are eager to do so
3) I can build an audience of readers that will understand Dropmints and build a personal connection to me and the startup.
I didn’t do much with this information (more on that later…).
ANYWAY, I continued my day. I’m back in Illinois visiting my family so it’s been tough to sit down separately and work, luckily my co-founder Sean is here with me. We use Notion to track our daily key tasks, our calendar, and our notes. Every morning we go to Dunkin’ (Starbucks sucks) and on that drive we go through our main goals for the day, possible opportunities for the startup, and other personal and life situations.
Once back at the house we went to my dads office to get some work done in the conference room. We are trying to raise a round right now and one of the investor groups reached out to us (our initial call was yesterday), and asked for more information. They asked for a 3 month plan for revenue vs expected spending and an explanation of drop style marketing.
Sean, as CMO, put together a Notion page on how the drop marketing works and sent it over immediately. I created a basic 3 month plan based on previous numbers we had run and sent it over to them as well. Immediately- they asked for even more information. They now want a full business roadmap, blueprint, and more.
We’ve already sent them a pitch deck, 3 month plan, lots of email answers, and a 1.5 hour zoom call.
Lesson Learned: Always be ready to answer MORE questions, send MORE information, and do MORE in general.
Let me explain- if we had done an exercise or just put more thought into this process before starting we likely would’ve had these additional materials ready because what they are asking for is a no-brainer.
The above events took place throughout the entire day but we got a lot more done. The full business roadmap and blueprint is still in progress. I reached out to 9 more VC firms, updated our funding OS, and interviewed a community manager.
In between all this we had lunch and dinner. We also managed to play a game of pickup basketball with some hometown friends. (The “we” means me chillin’ in the corner looking at my phone- I couldn’t play basketball to save my life)
I was also able to create and write this first newsletter. I think this will be interesting and I’m going to use it to benefit all of you, Dropmints, and myself.
